There is a lot of talk about the importance of quality work with our children, which affects their entire lives, but the elderly can be a part of our lives just the same. It is necessary to take care of them too.
Back in the good old days! We could start like this. But it was different a long time ago. You don't even have to go back that long. Multi-generational coexistence was not only a way of life with huge compromises, but helping each other was solved within the family. In addition to the mother, older relatives living with the newly born child could be of great help. When the health and mental health of the elderly was declining, they were not left alone, as the younger members of the family took care of them.
Today, however, many elderly people are left alone. It is not only the deterioration of the relationship within the family that should be suspected behind this. Many people, in the hope of a better life, tried to find their way to another, distant settlement, or even a foreign country, so they rarely get to visit the people at home.
If you are one of those whose parents or at least one of them is still alive and you have the opportunity to take care of them, then you are one of the lucky ones. And if your relationship is strong, that's the jackpot. Not dealing with elderly parents is not a solution. Not even if you live in a social institution. If the elderly parent is still taking care of himself, he probably needs help, or at least he likes it.
Old people are not so mobile anymore. Perhaps a major bath, facial, or pedicure is the kind of activity you can't do on your own. Help him by making his life more comfortable at least once a month by helping him cut his nails and wash his hair.
Do you still do the work around the house yourself? It is to be appreciated, but there is certainly work around the house that is burdensome for an elderly organism. Take over that workflow for him. In the meantime, it will provide you with useful knowledge.
It can also be good for an elderly family member if someone takes the work out of their hands and we do it together or completely surrender.
Perhaps the most important thing is that you spend quality time together. You can even talk and relive old stories while doing garden or household work. If there is plenty of time, look for old photos and talk about the people in the picture. I'm sure there will be incredible stories. Maybe some that you haven't even heard of before.
