The omnipotence of man means that meat is one of our ingredients. At least that's what our teeth are. Whether or not we take advantage of this opportunity is everyone's individual perception and decision.
Many people are reassured by the fact that in some countries dogs are still kept - we would not even consider housing conditions now - because animals are slaughtered and consumed in the same way as cattle, pigs and other four-legged farm animals. The dog is a loyal friend and companion of man, which is why we treat them as family members. Consuming them is completely unthinkable, it doesn’t fit into our culture, maybe it never even belonged to it. What makes it more normal to stuff meat made from your own meat into the pork and eat it as a sausage?
It all depends on our culture and customs. Let us have food that is foreign to us, bizarre and even unthinkable.
If it was a pet, the guinea pig is a popular pet in Hungary as well. This charming little rodent can be a cuddly buddy for kids to get used to easily. Clearly in a cage its place as a pet and not on our plate. There are places where chicken is considered a common dish here. It is enjoyed in Ecuador and Peru.
And if you’re a rodent, there’s the rat , too. The long-tailed rat, which is a pest to us, is not at all popular around the houses. Maybe our throats won’t tighten when we learn they’re being consumed in Vietnam. But disgust can overwhelm us so much that we don’t even think about consuming rat meat.
Surely many of them are also disgusted by insects both alive and dead, so they would not be happy to meet them on their plates as food. Beetles and worms, which are otherwise excellent sources of protein, are consumed in Indonesia, Thailand, Mexico and Africa.
While the sight and serving of multi-legged insects as food is terrible for some, reptiles and amphibians cause at least as much trauma to others. Although some domestic restaurants make frog thighs, there are few dishes on the menu. Not by accident. In Peru, they are skinned and made into loot, after which they imagine a special force here and there.
It is not uncommon in Asia to eat dried lizards on skewers. What we have is a lizard.
Hold on! They also consume live animals somewhere. Isn't that totally hair-raising and unimaginable? Yet in Japan there is a kind of fish, ikizukuri. Unlucky, it fills up before consumption and can be swallowed.
Not everyone likes seafood, but we can be even more discouraged if we find out that in South Korea, for example, we try to swallow a multi-armed goods, the octopus , alive. The live animal struggles to survive and can also use its well-functioning suction cups to get out of the throat. Even the thought is awful, but even a fleeing octopus can cause suffocation.
