This year's autumn has been spoiled so far, but we still know that winter is coming and we need to prepare our plants and the garden for it.
The autumn months are the ideal time to prepare your garden for the winter, so that in the spring you can boast of healthy plants and a tidy garden. The transplants have probably already been done by everyone at this time, but in the unusually mild weather it is not too late. The more protected, frost-free place was not yet necessary, meaning that the winterization of the plants was not delayed either. However, what is still worth doing now:
Leaf stacking: the constantly falling colorful leaves can provide regular work in the garden and on the street. Collect fallen leaves from grass and plant beds. By rotting in the soil, the pile of leaves can provide nutrients to the plants. If there is enough space in the garden, you can offer shelter to the animals that visit you.
Trimming back plants: trim back overhanging branches for shrubs and trees, as well as perennials. Remove dead plant parts to keep the garden tidy and healthy.
Propagation: during transplanting and transport to a winter location, propagation can also be done by cuttings or division. This is a good time to create new plants or multiply existing ones.
Protection of frost-sensitive plants: move movable plants to a frost-free place, but if you have plants in the garden that are frost-sensitive, protect them by covering their stems with straw, or even cover the entire plant with frost-resistant foil.
Protection of trees: check the trees in the garden during periods of icing. Free the weak branches of the younger ones from the ice so they don't break off. Do the same for snow.
Care of garden tools: clean and maintain your garden tools. It is worth cleaning, oiling and sharpening the rake, shovel and garden shears. Turn off the garden tap so that the frozen water does not damage it.
Composting: material for composting is constantly being generated in the household, so it is worth taking care of it so that you can use it in the spring.
Drainage: clean drains, gutters and drip systems so water can flow freely.
Pool, garden pond: covering the pool may already be ideal, but in mild weather the pond does not need to be taken care of.
These tasks require time and energy from us, but this is the secret to a beautiful and healthy garden in the spring.
