Handmade soap, jam, jewelery or chocolate - everyone writes on your product what anyone wants or controls, what craft and what isn't it? Are there any criteria for the craft product label in Hungary ? The expert said the rules, but the consumer can do most. There is a webshop where craft products are tested before they start selling.
In the case of food, the situation is simpler and there are regulations: non-mechanized but craft-based additive-free products fall into the craft category. Although the procedure can be partly mechanized, it must be based on manual work, human effort, guidance and experience.
Thin border
Another important rule is that additives, imitates, artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and flavor enhancers are not used in the production of such foods, and the name and address of the manufacturer of the product must always be indicated. "There is a thin line between craft and traditional foods, because there is a divergent view of what is mechanized and what is not," says Anikó Haraszti, consumer protection expert at the Conscious Customers Association. Of course, consumer campaigns start from time to time to clarify what the craft category is about. The NFCI can check at any time by checking or sampling whether the claims that the product advertises about itself, such as if the product is claimed by a craftsman.
For example, if a jam is made in a traditional open cauldron, contains little added sugar and has a high fruit content and is preserved by heat treatment, it is a craft jam. Such as the Hungarian Product Award Tarpa Jam , which this year became the most popular craft product of the Bonus Brigade. One-third of the customers will vote for the apricot from the 5 flavors, most of which will be lost on the virtual shelves. "It is important for us to offer quality products, so we test every single item that gets into the Bonus Brigade, the Tarpa jam is not only a favorite of colleagues, family," says Zoltán Kaprinay, founder of the Bonus Brigade.
Less but better quality
Katalin Papp Vargha worked in European Union projects at the Institute of Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, but it was not creative enough for the job. The chocolate became more familiar with his work during his university studies in a project project. He soon discovered that home-made chocolate baking was not enough for quality chocolate production, so he finally gained his skills at a foreign chocolate academy. “It depends on a lot of things what the chocolate will be like, for example, the speed of mixing, the temperature in the workshop. Chocolate making is complicated. When we started, more and more people were looking for quality and filming the boxes for the ingredients. Price is still a strong deterrent, but the global trend is to lose chocolates, but better, ”said Papp Vargha Katalin, founder of Chocomaze . “For Chochomaze, we got a test package of all 6 flavors that we tasted not only with our colleagues but also with our customers who came to the Bonus Brigade Shop. It is a very important rule for us to test these products in every case, ”says Adrián Turjányi, Sales Manager of the Bonus Brigade product.
According to a previous research , two-thirds of customers thought the premium for craft products was 10 to 25 percent, willing to pay more for these products. It also turned out that married couples, graduates and mothers with two children are more likely to buy handcrafted food than single or childless. The main motivation for the purchase is the high quality products of domestic origin, which are mostly purchased at fairs and exhibitions.
Can a microfiber food be a craft if there is no additive in it?
The idea of an add-on fast food was born in the minds of some young people when they didn't have time to cook in the rush, but they found the prestigious ladybug. However, no additives and preservatives-free ingredients were found in addition to the leche. Therefore, it was decided to produce durable foods instead of canned food for people with health consciousness. That's how POLCZ was born, which can also be found in the Bonus Brigade's offer and, of course, half of the office was in the queue for the hot swings before getting in.
Handmade creams
"It is also important for our customers to offer us to include in the supply: the Babyzoo family of products is recommended by the parents of Brigade babies and tested by our younger colleagues," says Zoltán Kaprinay. The range of Lina products that contain natural ingredients are made by hand, not on the production line. The products combine scientific knowledge and the craftsmanship of craft making with quality, controlled ingredients.
What does the consumer expect from a handicraft product?
It is unique and, of course, healthy. Whether or not its production is mechanized does not seem to be as important to customers as it is one of the basic criteria for crafts. "Crafts are a quality jump," says Anikó Haraszti. "When we go to a festival and fair, it's hard to do it: beside the craft potter, there are wooden toys made with machine lathes in China - who decides which craft is? I think this concept is not clear in the minds of consumers and manufacturers. ”
Testing is also a good solution for the Conscious Buyers Association. It is also worth asking: what does the manufacturer think of his product as a craft? According to Anikó Haraszti, an information note would be welcomed, which reports on the products in question in one or two sentences, similarly to the term 'Hungarian product', to which information material belongs.
